IMD Issues Warning: Intensified Rainfall Expected in Kerala
Thiruvananthapuram: Anticipate a surge in rainfall across Kerala as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issues warnings for intensified precipitation on November 30 and December 1. Yellow alerts have been specifically issued for Idukki, Kozhikode, Wayanad on November 30, and Pathanamthitta and Idukki on December 1.
The IMD predicts thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds, reaching speeds of 30-40 Kmph at selected locations in Kerala from November 28 to December 2.
This upswing in rainfall intensity is attributed to a developing low-pressure area in the south Andaman Sea, anticipated to move west-northwestwards and intensify into a Depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal by November 30, 2023. Subsequently, it is expected to progress northwestwards, intensifying further into a Cyclonic Storm over the Southwest and adjoining Southeast Bay of Bengal within the following 48 hours, according to the latest IMD bulletin.
Further influencing the weather patterns, cyclonic circulations over the southwest Arabian Sea and south Sri Lanka are also expected to impact the region’s rainfall.
With just a month remaining in the northeast monsoon season, Kerala has already experienced excess rainfall, recording a 21 percent surplus from October 1 to November 28. All districts have reported either normal or excess rainfall during this season, with Pathanamthitta leading with an 81 percent excess. The northeast monsoon season is slated to conclude by December 31. Stay tuned for updates as the region navigates these dynamic weather conditions.
